7. The Good Place

Members: Perhaps one of the most unorthodox friend-group sitcoms on the list and that we’ll probably ever see on TV, beloved comedy The Good Place brings Eleanor (Kristen Bell), Chidi (William Jackson Harper), Tahani (Jameela Jamil), Jason (Manny Jacinto), Janet (D’Arcy Carden), and Michael (Ted Danson) together in the afterlife. Their journey through the places, both good and bad, isn’t your average activity for a sitcom friend group, but they make it look exciting.

Memorable moments: After the upcoming fourth and final season, The Good Place will sign off with 13 more episodes of memorable moments. But the build-up to the final finish has been marked by some of the craziest twists and wildest moments any sitcom, albeit high-concept, has ever seen. The series has seen Team Cockroach/The Soul Squad learn how to fly, visit Mindy St. Claire in the Medium Place, tackle the Trolley Problem, face-off with The Judge, go back to Earth, turn into a bunch of Janets, and go to the darkest IHOP you could imagine.

Running gags: The Good Place boasts an ace team of writers that use everything from dialogue to background set design to land a joke. Some of the show’s best running gags involve Eleanor’s inability to use profane language, Chidi’s paralyzing indecision, and Janet’s unofficial catchphrase — “Not a robot.” There’s also an enviable use of sight gags, from the flavors of frozen yogurt available in the “Good Place” to the names of the many ridiculous restaurants.

Key episodes: “Everything Is Fine,” “Category 55 Emergency Doomsday Crisis,” “Chidi’s Choice,” “Michael’s Gambit,” “Team Cockroach,” “The Trolley Problem,” “The Burrito,” “Jeremy Bearimy,” “Janet(s),” “Chidi Sees the Time-Knife.”
