6. Will & Grace

Members: You can call them the fabulous four or the fearsome foursome (their jokes at each other’s expense go for broke, after all), but the core four of NBC’s Will & Grace have proven to be one of the all-time greatest sitcom friend groups. And they even have the power to make a splashy comeback. Will (Eric McCormack), Grace (Debra Messing), Jack (Sean Hayes), and Karen (Megan Mullally) live by a “no new friends” rule, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Memorable moments: Sometimes you could watch Will & Grace and think, “Why are these people even friends?!” Most of the time, they’re tossing barbs at one another that are so sharp that you’d never expect them to recover. But zingers are the bedrock of this quartet’s friendship. For better or worse, they have survived wild boat trips, divorces and adoption drama, and run-ins with Grace’s sworn enemy, Val. The fab four have been to the White House, danced with Janet Jackson, and stalked Kevin Bacon — though most of those were just Jack. (See what we did there?)

Running gags: Born in the height of multi-cam sitcom success, Will & Grace ran almost purely on running gags and recurring character quirks, like Grace’s appetite and Karen’s constant shading of Grace’s appearance. For instance, every time Jack enters Will and Grace’s apartment, he bursts through the door differently each time. And for most of the original run, Jack hosted his one-man show called, what else, “Just Jack.” Karen often overuses the word “honey,” references drug and alcohol habits, and feuds with her maid Rosario. Don’t forget her closest confidante, Smitty.

Key episodes: “A New Lease on Life,” “Grace, Replaced,” “Das Boob,” “Acting Out,” “Lows in the Mid-Eighties,” “Bed, Bath, and Beyond,” “Humongous Growth,” “I Do, Oh, No, You Di-in’t,” “Queens for a Day,” “Alive and Schticking,” “Who’s Your Daddy?,” Staten Island Fairy,” “Grace’s Secret.”
