Talor Gooch – $8,900 – (GPP)
Goooooch! My man Gooch was on fire last week and sadly, I may have overlooked him for all of us. After a final round of 70 on Sunday, Gooch found himself at 14-under par and in a tie for 17th place at the Rocket Mortgage Classic last week. It was his first action since his T-35 at the RBC Canadian Open, and it seems as though Gooch has really been boom or bust for the most part since he burst onto the PGA scene back in January.

To be honest, I can’t believe it was the end of January as it seems like just yesterday that Gooch came out of nowhere to fire rounds of 67,67,66,64 at the Desert Classic to finish 24-under par, and alone in fourth place for his best career finish at that time. It didn’t last long though, as Gooch was at it again the following week at the Farmers Insurance Open, where he T-3.
Since the hot start to 2019, Gooch has missed four cuts and had two top-20’s in eight events. This is a true GPP play this week as the missed cut seems just as likely as the top-20, but I like what I saw from him last week.
Sepp Straka – $8,700 – (Cash)
This is a first for me this season, but I think I will hop on the Sepp Straka bandwagon this week. I obviously wanted to just gravitate to resident “Also Consider” Peter Malnati, but the fact that his best asset, his putter, really struggled on Sunday, and he fell from what looked like an easy top-20 finish down to T-29 for the tournament, has me a little uneasy.
Malnati is making cuts at a consistent clip still, and is probably cash safe as well, but with what I saw from Straka last week at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, he could very well be this weeks Brian Stuard. Straka has made four cuts in his last five events now, and even when he missed at the Travelers Championship, it was not by much.
After he shot 4-under on the final day at Pebble Beach to move up to a T-28 at the U.S. Open, I really started to look a little closer here. I was not quite ready to pounce at the Travelers the following week (thankfully), and I think jumping on right now is not too late. The fact that Straka was good on Sunday once again last week in Detroit shooting a five-under 66 to finish T-11 while others struggled, has given him that extra push over Malnati this week for my cash lineup. Although I do feel both will at least make the weekend.
