3. The Cowboys will trade for a safety

Mid season trades aren’t as prevalent in the NFL as some other professional leagues, but they are on the rise. Look for the Cowboys to dip into the trade market to give some crucial help to their secondary this season.

There’s no weaker position group on the Dallas roster than at safety. Xavier Woods and Jeff Heath are penciled in as the current starters, but it’s very possible George Iloka can work his way into the mix. In all honesty, the Cowboys could stand to add two starting safeties, but they’ll likely be forced to settle for one.

As for the identity of the safety who will head to Big D, it’s anyone’s guess right now. The Cowboys will look for a team to fall out of contention early and try to cut salary/improve their draft status. That’s the kind of franchise that will be open to parting with a safety who can provide Dallas with an immediate upgrade in the secondary.

There’s also a possibility that a free agent comes in and fills this void. The Cowboys kicked the tires on a number of guys earlier in the offseason, but never seemed ready to pull the trigger. That indecision is going to cost them a big game early in the season. Then they’ll swing a trade for a safety to correct their issues moving forward.
