5 bold predictions for Cowboys in 2019
1. Dak Prescott will become the NFL’s highest paid quarterback
Prescott isn’t the best quarterback in football. His inability to elevate average talent around him leaves him outside the top echelon of signal callers reserved for guys like Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady. That fact isn’t going to stop the Cowboys for breaking the bank to keep him.
The Dallas front office is doing a nice job of slow playing negotiations at the moment, but that’s going to change the minute Prescott has a big game in the regular season. Jerry Jones just won’t be able to stop himself from handing him a massive contract that will cause die-hard Cowboys fans to celebrate.
In fairness to the Cowboys front office, they really don’t have a choice other than to retain Prescott. Letting him leave in free agency would set the franchise back by a minimum of five years. Trying to use the franchise tag to retain him would cost Dallas a small fortune. They have to find a way to ink him to a long-term contract.
Prescott and his representatives are keenly aware of that reality. They’re going to ask for the moon and there’s a significant possibility Jones and company will give it to them. Prescott’s status as the highest paid quarterback in the league will be short-lived, but it’s still going to make the former Mississippi State star a considerable fortune.
