MLB DFS Pitching Primer: Wednesday, July 3 – Buehler Bounces Back

MLB DFS Pitching Primer: Cheap Arm/SP2
Griffin Canning (8k FD, 8.7k DK) @ Texas
Another slate in which I get to recommend the outstanding rookie Canning, yes, it’s a good day! This kid continues to impress me with his durability and his ability to “pitch” and not just “throw.” We see so many young pitchers come up and try to overpower major league hitters by throwing hard and they end up getting shelled. Canning is different from most rookies in that he has four polished pitches that he can use at his disposal in order to keep hitters off-balance.
He’s had a few rocky starts, but has yet to be blown up with four earned runs being the most he’s allowed in any of his 11 starts this season. He’s also pitched at least 6 innings in 5 of his last 6 starts, which is huge on FanDuel when you are looking for those quality start points.
His match-up today is a tough one as he faces a good-hitting Texas team on the road, one that has some power from the left side of the plate. However, Canning brings a 24% K rate and a 15% swinging strike rate (second highest on the slate) with him into Arlington against a team that strikes out 24% of the time. He held them in check in his first match-up, allowing only one run over five innings while striking out five and I think he’s got upside for more than that if he has his good stuff tonight.
