MLB DFS Pitching – Early Only Pitching Plays:

Tommy Milone – Milone has been a very pleasant surprise for the Mariners, and has performed very well behind an opener. This has put a slight cap on his point totals, since he is unable to register a quality start this way. The pitchers are very ugly on this slate, so at his price, Tommy appears to be the best bang for your buck. He will see a lot of RHH, where his numbers are not great, but are improving.

Recently, he has been increasing his change-up usage to that side, and decreased the fastball usage. Why is this relevant? Well, his change-up gets far more GB than the fastball, and more whiffs. It also moves over eight inches horizontally, and between four-six inches vertically. While the fastball is very slow, and moves nine inches. This Cardinals team hits a lot of GB on the change-up, with decent whiffs as well. This helps Milone quite a bit today.

Michael Wacha – At the start of the season, Wacha was a player you could stack against and feel pretty good about it. As the year has progressed, Wacha has made some adjustments, especially to LHH, where his numbers are actually not that bad. He will see six of them today, where his K rate is 21%, a .163 ISO, 40% GB, and 37.5% HC.

All of those numbers are better, expect for GB compared to RHH. One of his changes that was made is his increased change-up usage to LHH. This has really helped get him more whiffs, since that pitch is getting about 40%. He has pretty low ISO numbers across the board, with solid movement on all of his pitches. Seattle has been a team we can target, with a high K rate, and today is no different.
