MLB DFS Pitching Primer: Cheap Arm/SP2

Drew Pomeranz (7.3k FD, 6.8k DK) vs. St. Louis

So I will let you in on a little secret, I have been taking pitchers against the Cardinals now for the last 2-3 weeks with a good amount of success. They have been one of the coldest offenses over the last month despite the fact that they have talented hitters in their lineup. They recently have resorted to shaking things up and putting some more young players in their lineup, but are still posting some unimpressive numbers offensively. Against lefties this season they are in the bottom half of the league in both ISO and wOBA. They simply don’t scare me at all.

Now rostering Drew Pomeranz does scare me, but I have to admit that he seems to have turned the corner and is pitching well (for the most part) lately. His overall numbers still look ugly (ERA over 6, too many HRs allowed, 10% walk rate) but he shown some major improvement as the season has gone along.

This is a guy who is still an elite strikeout pitcher (26% now on the season and well over a K/inning). Over his last five starts, he’s allowed no runs three times, two runs once, and had one bad outing in which he gave up 7 runs to Dodgers. His xFIP of 4.42 is really a better indicator of how he’s pitched this year compared to his ERA as he should have some progression coming his way with home runs, too.

The price on Pomeranz is really nice on both sites. I’ll take a shot at a hot pitcher with his strikeout potential against a cold offense like the Cardinals in GPPs any day!
