Fear the Walking Dead had a spotlight on Dwight’s search for his estranged wife Sherry with the extra pair of eyes of one John Dorie.

This recap contains spoilers for Fear the Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 6.

This week’s Fear the Walking Dead was a bit predictable, full of feel-good cliched dialogue, and generally lacking a sense of real urgency. Mostly every conversation was meant to incite strong emotional response from the viewer, yet lacked genuine passion. Thus, the episode felt flat and recalled just how much Nick and Madison are missing from the series. Instead of radioactive walkers and a nuclear reactor breathing new life into the show, there’s been too much slow-paced interpersonal dialogue. The excitement of the radioactive angle has been stifled by this tepid progression. There was one expected but still enjoyable highlight: The search for Sherry.

The narrative continues the good memories and the mystery from Fear’s parent show, The Walking Dead. Even though John Dorie finding Sherry’s letter (which said for Dwight not to look for her) and not telling Dwight about it was predictable, it had heart. The pain in Dorie’s face as he lied to Dwight was tangible and real and reminiscent of Joel lying to Ellie at the conclusion of The Last of Us. It continues a relationship story that Walking Dead fans have wanted closure on for some time.

It was also entertaining to see a bit of a TWD callback with Morgan’s training at the beginning of the episode. Outside of this, there was way too much emphasis on ‘You can do it, believe in yourself’ motivational-style monologues posing as conversations. Annie’s constant gravitational pull towards leaving the group and taking the youngsters with her felt half-baked. As if the script called for the character to continue a passive conflict with Alicia, even when there wasn’t truly a reason for one. Annie’s teary-eyed story of what happened to her parents just didn’t seem like enough to abandon the opportunity presented to her.

Rather, it seemed like an easy plot ploy to split the group up once again, a tried-and-true formula but overdone at this point. On the other side of town, it was good to see some old Strand finally surface up momentarily. He admitted to Charlie that he was offering platitudes over the walkie-talkie and wasn’t sure they could really help the group. They would end up using a hot air ballon with intention to personally hand deliver a propeller to Al and the rest of the group. However, the hot air ballon would run out of fuel and they crashed into the radioactive walker zone. Meanwhile, Morgan decided to head to the nuclear power plant with no protective suit to assist Grace … Despite being told not to follow her.
