Some bold predictions for college football quarterbacks in 2019
A QB will not win the 2019 Heisman Trophy
The Heisman Trophy has been dominated by quarterbacks in the last 18 years, with only three winners not standing under center on the field — running back Reggie Bush in 2005 (vacated), running back Mark Ingram in 2009, and running back Derrick Henry in 2015.
Get ready for another departure from the QB-dominated award.
There are, to be sure, a number of great quarterbacks who will get a lot of Heisman attention this season, but none of them are truly in a position to be thought of as runaway contenders even early in the season.
You might see flashes from the aforementioned Fromm and Fields, and you can’t count out Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa or Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence. But none of them will do enough to get the votes needed to lift the Heisman over their head.
No, this year the Heisman will be presented to either a running back (Yawn) a wide receiver (Huh?) or maybe even a defensive player (Gasp! Perish the thought!).
There will be one, possibly two, quarterbacks invited to the presentation ceremony, but none of them will head home with the hardware. Baker Mayfield will then hold a press conference saying by his charisma and on-field greatness, he spoiled it for all future quarterbacks being considered for the award.
