The 2019 Open Championship: PGA Golf Betting Picks & Analysis
PGA Golf: Longshot Outright Bets – The 2019 Open Championship
Patrick Reed – (80/1)
Reed is not playing as great as he was when he won the Masters last year, and he still has not won since. Regardless of that fact, he is playing much better than the golfers listed on the previous page, aside from maybe Tiger Woods overall.
Reed T-32 at the U.S. Open, and at the very least, he has played well enough to make the weekend in his last four events. He T-5 at the inaugural Rocket Mortgage Classic, and his overall play was in tune with what we can expect from him.
However, in his last action at the 3M Open, he was really wasn’t bad with rounds of 69,67,68, and 67, but it wasn’t good enough compared to what the kids were doing, and it led to a T-23 finish. All that did in my opinion was give us some favorable odds for this week.
Do I think Reed will win the Open Championship? Probably not, but nobody thought that when he won the Masters in 2018.
Golf is a funny game, and betting on it is all about odds. Reed could easily be right in the mix with Garcia and Mickelson at 40 or 50/1, so I just love the value here. I wouldn’t bet on it, but my guess is that Reed gets to 66/1 or so before tee off a week from now.
Hao-Tong Li – (100/1)
There really isn’t much to say about Li, other than the fact that 100/1 is really favorable PGA Golf odds for the 23-year-old, 42nd ranked golfer in the world.
Li shot 6-under par at Royal Birkdale in 2017 to finish alone in third place at the 146th Open Championship, and he comes into Royal Portrush off of a T-15 at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open. That will change though as well, as he is currently in action this week.
Li had a rough opening round of 73 at the Scottish Open, and it will be interesting to see if he drops to around 125/1 or so if he ends up missing the cut here. 100/1 is good, but this is looking like it could get even better, and there is not many golfers in this range who I feel actually have a shot to win. Which brings me to another point before we get to our last longshot.
It is still early. As I am currently finishing up this article, one round is complete at the Scottish Open, and the first round is underway at the John Deere Classic.
There are plenty of golfers in action this week, and many of them do not currently have odds listed on Bovada. I am sure they will pile in over the next few days, but there only currently 62 golfers listed, meaning some much better bets should be piling in over the next few days.
Keep an eye out for guys like Kevin Streelman, who was a late addition to the field, and rookies Sungjae Im and Joaquin Niemann, as all three could also present some favorable odds, and all are playing fantastic golf as of late.
Bernd Wiesberger – (150/1)
I love getting a player of this caliber at 150/1, and this is one of only a very small handful that I have already locked in. The 33-year-old Austrian has not played well in past Open Championships, but he will be coming in to this Royal Portrush in possibly the best form of his career, after playing poorly for a very long stretch.
Royal Portrush is a good fit for Wiesberger, but what really has me locked in is how well he has played since his first win since 2017, which came in late May at the Made in Denmark on the European Tour. Since that win, he has a T-16, and two top-tens, including a T-2 at the Irish Open last week.
Wiesberger is currently 2-under par through 15 holes at the Scottish Open, and a good finish this weekend and more bets coming in could easily move him closer to 100/1 by the time the 148th Open Championship is under way.
Before I conclude. I want to cite my favorite source for most of my PGA Golf research, especially this article, and this is the perfect time to do it. Much thanks to Mr. Mike Miller and Smart Golf Bets.
His tournament sheets are a fantastic free source of information. Mike is a very smart golf mind on so many levels, and truly one of the good guys in the golf industry, as he well-respected by all of your favorite PGA personalities.
That will conclude this PGA Golf Betting article from FanSided Fantasy. Be sure to check out my PGA Power Rankings, and my FanDuel picks as always this week, all right here.
If you have any questions there is a Twitter link at the top of the article, and I would love to hear from you. Here is to hoping I make somebody some money this weekend! Cheers!
