Hakim Ziyech

It’s somewhat surprising that Hakim Ziyech’s name hasn’t come up more in transfer rumors this summer, since the argument can be made that he was just as important to Ajax’s domestic and Champions League success last season as Juventus-bound Matthijs de Ligt (a former Bayern target himself).

Ziyech has drawn interest from clubs like Arsenal and Bayern, but if those are the two most discussed teams in the running for his signature, Bayern would clearly be the front-runners if they are interested.

There is no doubt that Ziyech is a Bayern-quality player. And with James Rodriguez back in Real Madrid and set to join either Napoli or PSG, Bayern could also use a player capable of starting on the wing or as a No. 10. Ziyech is world class at either position.

Last season, Ziyech led all Eredivisie players with an average of 1.08 goals and assists per game when omitting penalties, leading the league with 13 assists.

His determination, dribbling ability, distance shooting, vision, and flair were repeatedly on display in the Champions League, as he and Dusan Tadic were Ajax’s main creative outlets in attack.

Ziyech is in the prime of his career at 26 and thus doesn’t have the upside or resale value of even the 23-year-old Sane, but that would make him an affordable backup option for Bayern.

And given how impressive he was last season domestically, Bayern wouldn’t necessarily be settling either. An Eredivisie double-swoop for Ziyech and Bergwijn might not be a bad idea.
