Fantasy Football Strategy: 4 Crowded Backfields to Avoid

Philadelphia Eagles

Current Depth Chart:

It doesn’t get much busier than that on a running backs depth chart. Five names that all Fantasy Football players should be familiar with will be fighting for a roster spot. Of course, rookie Miles Sanders, and Jordan Howard are locks. However, the final 1-2 spots will be up for grabs between Wendell Smallwood, Josh Adams, and Corey Clement. We got to see each of these backs in some sort of featured role last season once Jay Ajayi went down early in the season with an ACL tear.

Assistant head coach, and former Eagles running back Duce Staley has stated that the Eagles are going to continue using a running back by committee approach. Last season, the Eagles

Had five running backs who accumulated at least 40 touches. Staley has also expressed that he is happy with where both Sanders, and Howard are at. This is coach talk that we should absolutely believe, as this backfield should have as close to a 50/50 split of any.

Miles Sanders is being drafted as the RB35, which is slightly higher than Jordan Howard (RB38). This puts them right around the 7th and 8th round range. This is an extremely fair range for these two running backs to be selected. As long as both of them stay on the field, I’d imagine they will both see work. Howard should have the slight edge to lead Eagles running backs in carries, while Sanders should contribute more in the passing game. Unless you have a strong take on the direction this backfield is headed, it is probably one that is not going to produce an RB1.
