Three Down for Saturday, July 13 – MLB DFS Afternoon Games

Pitcher To Fade

Jordan Lyles at CHC

Besides Richard, Lyles is another pitcher to consider staying away from Saturday. As mentioned in Bryant’s entry, Lyles was on a downward spiral in the last several starts prior to the All-Star break. He also has already been hit hard by the Cubs once this season, yielding seven earned runs on 10 hits and a walk over four innings in a July 4 start. What’s more, current Chicago bats own a collective .287/.301/.632 line across 87 career at-bats versus Lyles.

Lyles’ numbers on the road actually look much better than his home metrics. However, he’s also been helped out significantly when traveling by an artificially low .247 BABIP, especially considering he’s yielded an elevated 22.6 percent line-drive rate and 40.6 percent hard-contact rate in his away starts. He’s also had plenty of trouble versus left-handed hitters again this season (.293 BAA and .385 wOBA allowed), and the Cubs boast a potent lefty trio of Anthony Rizzo, Kyle Schwarber and Jason Heyward.

Hitter To Fade

Starling Marte at CHC

Marte will typically cost you a good amount around the industry, and it’s with good reason overall. The Pirates slugger is having a solid season, but Saturday may nevertheless be a stay-away day. To begin with, Marte will face Jon Lester, against who he’s posted a .205/.279/.282 line across 43 career plate appearances. That sample includes just three extra-base hits (all doubles) and six strikeouts.

Then, Lester is far from the only lefty Marte has struggled against. He’ll check into Saturday’s game with a .219 average and .255 wOBA versus southpaws, with those figures dropping to .167 and .203 when facing them on the road. Lester has also been tough to break when pitching at Wrigley, as he owns a 2.42 ERA and has allowed a modest .308 wOBA over 48.1 home frames.

And, consider the matchup won’t necessarily get any easier for Marte once Lester exits. The Cubs bullpen sported a 2.82 ERA., .185 BAA and .276 wOBA allowed at Wrigley versus right-handed hitters over the last month of play.

Stack To Fade

Blue Jays at NYY (LHP J.A. Happ)

Current Blue Jays have had plenty of trouble against former Toronto southpaw J.A. Happ, as they sport a collective .193/.207/.368 line against him over a sample of 57 at-bats. Happ has been a bit inconsistent this season, but outside of a major blowup against a potent Astros lineup his next-to-last start before the All-Star break, he actually has been pitching well since late May.

The Blue Jays have performed well overall against left-handed pitching overall on the season, but Happ seems to truly have their number. That much was evident already once this season, when he allowed just one earned run on four hits over seven innings in a June 6 start at Rogers Centre.

The Yankees bullpen should also be taken into account — they’ve allowed just a .223 average and .290 wOBA across the 177 innings they’ve logged thus far at Yankee Stadium.
