MLB DFS Pitching Primer: Early Slate

Brendan McKay (7.3k FD, 9k DK) @ Baltimore

It might seem obvious to just pick on the Orioles, who are have one of the weakest offenses and highest strikeout rates on this early slate. However, what is extra awesome about this matchup is we have a chance to buy low (well, at least he’s priced low on FanDuel) one more time on the young rookie McKay.

I wrote a little bit about McKay here in my midseason rookie pitching report and I’ll just reiterate today that I believe he is one of the best emerging young talents in baseball. He’s a rare two-way player who is being utilized mainly as a pitcher so far, but could down the road be used in the same way that Ohtani was by the Angels until his arm troubles – make his scheduled start and then enter the lineup as a hitter for several games until his next start.

I think this is a big-time breakout spot for McKay as far as strikeouts go. He’s only struck out three hitters in each of his first two starts but has had 28-40% K rates in the minors. He’s an easy play on FanDuel and my top choice on DK for cash or GPP contests as your SP1. The results haven’t blown us away yet, but there is a big game coming from this kid soon. It just might be today!

***Also, consider J.A. Happ (my first choice for an SP2 on DK) and Joe Musgrove who are both cheap on both sites.
