MLB DFS Pitching Primer: Other GPP Pivots

Matt Boyd (10.1k FD, 11.1k DK) @ Kansas City

Like I mentioned earlier, it’s easy to like Patrick Corbin or his mound opponent Aaron Nola at the top end of the salary scale today. You could probably even make a case for Trevor Bauer in a tough matchup against the Twins. However, my next high-priced pitcher I’m taking in some lineups tonight is Matt Boyd.

Boyd has been a strikeout machine this season, whiffing 32% of the hitters he’s seen. He’s been particularly awesome lately, striking out 24 hitters in his last two starts before the ASB. He’s faced the Royals twice this season with some mixed results. He threw 7 strong innings in his start against them while striking out 9, but was chased after four innings last time out, although he still struck out 7 Royals. The Royals are whiffing 23% of the time this year and are a team that I like picking on with high strikeout arms.

Madison Bumgarner (9.2k FD, 9k DK) @ Milwaukee

Mad-Bum had to leave his last start early and he took a batted ball off his arm. He has been pitching well this season for the Giants and had been trending up before the St. Louis game in particular. He struck out 20 hitters in a 13-inning stretch against Colorado and Arizona and has faced this Brewers team once already this season. He allowed three runs over six frames while striking out six in that first meeting.

I have been attacking the Brewers with lefties over the last month and despite the negative park shift for Mad-Bum and his recent injury, I think he’s well worth a shot here tonight. His 25% K rate is solid and the Brewers, despite being a powerful offense, are still whiffing at a 24% rate. At this price point, you can guarantee many players will just pay a few extra hundred bucks for Boyd or go up to some of the other elite arms so I expect Mad Bum to be low-owned.
