MLB DFS Pitching Primer: Cheap Arm/SP2

Wade Miley (7.5k FD, 8k DK) @ Texas

If you weren’t already aware, the Astros have made Wade Miley a pretty good pitcher this season. He’s facing another surprisingly good lefty in Mike Minor tonight (you all know how much I love that dude) but I am siding with Miley’s side of this matchup for a few reasons.

The Texas offense is considerably worse against lefties than righties. Meanwhile, the Houston offense is a good bit better vs. lefties than righties. Minor has been great this season, but at almost 10k on a loaded slate, I’ll have to pass and wait for a better spot to roll him out there. But back to Miley, he’s facing a Texas team that is striking out almost 25% of the time and he should be able to neutralize their left-handed power hitters with his cutter and curveball.

Miley has really learned how to pitch at this stage of his career and he’s simply not throwing that many fastballs anymore. He’s nibbling at the corners with his cutter and offspeed pitchers and forcing hitters to hit his pitches by working ahead in counts. He performed really well against Texas at home back in May when he went six innings and struck out seven Rangers while allowing only two runs on two hits. I like him a lot in this spot, even if the game total is high due to the good hitting environment in Arlington.
