Matthew Stafford (79)

While Matthew Stafford may never be “elite,” he’s been an above-average NFL quarterback for quite some time, even if he’s coming off of a down year. Playing quarterback for Matt Patricia isn’t easy, as the new Detroit Lions head coach looks out of his depth at the helm.

Factor in the poor running game, Marvin Jones’ injury, and Golden Tate’s trade (after the receiver was criminally misused by said head coach), and Stafford never really had a chance. His only true weapon for most of the season was Kenny Golladay.

Chalk up this sub-80 rating as another example of an NFC North quarterback being hit by recency bias on Madden’s part, which may, admittedly, be because of the video game’s dynamic rating system. Still, that’s no reason to rate Stafford as a well below-average starter.

This rating ranks Stafford tied with 19th in the NFL, as he slots below the likes of Kirk Cousins, Dak Prescott and Derek Carr. Stafford is better than those three quarterbacks, and it’s easy to forget that he was sixth in the NFL in QB Rating in the 2017 season before injuries — and Patricia — sunk the Lions offense.

Stafford is a good candidate to have a bounce-back year with Golladay as good as ever, Jones and Kerryon Johnson hopefully healthy, and both TJ Hockenson and Danny Amendola joining the party. He’s a good bet to rise several rating points from sub-80 purgatory.
