MLB DFS Pitching Primer: Gas Can of the Night

Chi Chi Gonzalez vs. San Francisco

Gonzalez is getting the call tonight for the Rockies as they need someone to step in and pitch the second game of their doubleheader with the Giants. If I were their GM, I may have called up any other pitcher on their AAA roster instead of Gonzalez because, frankly, he’s terrible. He’s made two starts this season for the Rox and has a 6.00 ERA as he’s allowed 6 runs on 11 hits in only 9 innings.

That’s much too small of a sample size to draw any major conclusions, so let’s look at his AAA stats this season. He’s allowed 15 home runs in 14 starts at AAA while carrying a 5.89 ERA and 5.94 FIP – yikes! He really only throws two pitches, a fastball, and a slider. And he’s giving up 46% hard contact so far in his limited action at the big league level.

Meanwhile, the Giants are an offense that has been surging over the last several weeks. They are a team that many DFS players are used to picking on, but tonight they should be an offense you target in all formats. They have a bunch of good left-handed bats that could give Gonzalez fits as well as a red-hot Evan Longoria and impressive youngster Austin Slate from the right side of the plate.

Stack up the Giants in GPPs tonight! I expect they will be lower owned than the Rockies and they could easily be the highest-scoring team on the slate!
