3. New York Yankees

Despite having seemingly every major contributor in their lineup and rotation spend time on the injured list this season, the New York Yankees have the best record in the American League and are running away with the AL East. The Yankees have faced down all sorts of adversity and are finally nearing full health. Unfortunately, they are still without ace Luis Severino, who is still battling a shoulder injury and will not return until at least the end of July.

The Yankees are in no danger of missing the playoffs despite their many injuries, but are still expected to chase a frontline starting pitcher at the trade deadline. They have been linked to all of the young, controllable arms, but Bumgarner is also a fit. It’s understandable that the Yankees feel the need to chase longer-term assets like Marcus Stroman given the year-to-year flux that has affected their rotation lately.

It’s understandable that the Yankees would prefer to trade for a starter they can control beyond this season as opposed to renting Bumgarner, but they will still keep tabs on his trade market. He has always seemed to thrive under pressure, and there is no bigger pressure cooker than New York City and the postseason in Yankee Stadium.

As much as the Yankees may prefer a controllable starter over a rental, their farm system just may not allow them to offer a huge package. Clint Frazier is their biggest trade chip, but the depth drops off quickly past him. Bumgarner may become a much more realistic trade target.
