1. Matthew Wallace (40-1)

Matt Wallace, currently the 23rd-ranked player according to the Official World Golf Rankings, comes in as the final dark horse that could win the 2019 British Open and it’s no surprise. Not only does he barely make the cut for the parameters of having 40-1 odds or worse at Royal Portrush but he’s also a player that has performed phenomenally on the big stages so far this season.

Back in mid-May, Wallace got on the radar at Bethpage Black in the PGA Championship as he finished tied for third. Furthermore, he then went to Pebble Beach a month later for the U.S. Open and put forth another impressive effort, finishing there tied for 12th, his second-straight top-15 finish in a major championship. Going back even further, he was a solid tied for 19th at the 2018 PGA Championship too.

The 29-year old Wallace isn’t new on the scene and he’s a player that has four European Tour victories to his credit in his career to this point. Given that and the way that he’s stepped up on the big stages so far this season, you have to think that he has a solid chance of making a run at the Claret Jug this week.

Wallace may have fallen off this list for a brief moment after a T55 at the Irish Open two weeks ago but bounced back with a solid tied for 14th finish at the Scottish Open this past week coming into The Open Championship. He’ll be in the spotlight playing with Tiger Woods and Patrick Reed for the first two rounds and he might just steal it from the two American stars.
