MLB DFS Pitching Primer: GPP Pivot #1

Michael Pineda (8.5k FD, 9.2k DK) vs. New York Mets

At 6′ 7″ and 260 pounds, right-hander Pineda fits the theme of the pitching primer today (basically just picking all the big boys). But more importantly than his stature is the fact that Pineda seems to have figured it out at this point in the season and is in great form coming into this match-up with the Mets.

Earlier this season, Pineda was having a major issue with home runs. He is a fly ball pitcher and he was having a hard time keeping opposing teams from taking him yard.

However, in his last seven starts, he has allowed only two long balls after allowing 16 in his first ten starts. He’s been really solid lately, allowing only one earned run in four of his last five starts while striking out 31 hitters over 28 innings.

The Mets will add a DH today and they certainly have some power in their lineup that poses a threat to Pineda tonight (Pete Alonso comes to mind), however, I still like Pineda a lot in this match-up.

His 12.5% swinging-strike rate is third-best on this slate and he simply doesn’t walk guys either. I think the powerful Twins offense tees off on Steven Matz and allows him to work with a comfortable lead for most of the night, too.
