MLB DFS Pitching Primer: Cheap Arm/SP2

Dylan Cease (6.7k FD, 9k DK) @ Kansas City

When you see a pricing discrepancy like this, you really have to wonder what’s going on. Draftkings was a bit ambitious in raising Cease’s price all the way up to 9k or they must have factored in the opposition into that price with their dynamic pricing.

Meanwhile, Cease is badly under-priced on FanDuel and therefore he makes for a great tournament option and a path to getting some Coors bats in your lineups.

If you don’t know much about Cease, he’s a rookie with an electric fastball that is making only his second major league start. In his debut, we saw some good and some bad as he struck out 6 in 5 innings against Detroit but also walked four while allowing three runs on four hits.

He only made 15 starts at AAA this season before getting called up, so he’s still very inexperienced. However, it’s clear that this kid has dynamic stuff and therefore some serious strikeout potential. He was carrying strikeout rates in the high 20’s or low 30’s all through the minors but again his walk rates have been high, too.

I normally don’t like using unproven rookies that often, but I really can’t ignore a high upside arm like Cease at this price on FanDuel against a Royals team that strikes out 23% of the time. They beat Giolito last night, which may cause some people to avoid this match-up today, but I think Cease has the talent to shut them down tonight if he can just avoid the free passes.
