MLB DFS Picks and Pivots: July 18 – Thorsday Bauer Hour!
MLB DFS – Building Our Bats:
UPDATE: So at 1PM EST FantasyDraft decided to change the slate and remove the Yankees/Rays game. So yeah, about this idea. Back to the drawing board.
If you step back and look at this slate, taking opposing arms out of the equation for a second, and just looked at the talent level of the offenses – I think the New York Yankees would stand out as the clear cut best set of bats on the board.
With the Dodgers and Red Sox playing early and no Coors game for the Rockies, from a pure talent perspective, it would be tough to find another offense on this slate with the sheer run upside of the Yankees.
Now there is going to be rain/thunderstorms all day in New York which could mess up the first part of this double-header and impact the night game, but it looks like we have the potential for a clear start in the nightcap with warm temperatures, high humidity and dewpoints in the bandbox in the Bronx.
The Yankees stack has a 5 IRT, with only three bats in the starting line-up priced over $8K. Remember when I said you would have about $7.7K per bat if you play Bauer and Thor together – yeah, I think you are seeing where I am going with this.
You can stack the Yankees with EASE today even with Bauer and Syndergaard in your builds as guys like Didi, Gleyber, Hicks and Voit are all $7.5K or cheaper and you can “spend up” on the big bats of Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez who cost $8.3K and $8.1K each.
Now, the reason they get this dynamic pricing is that they face an elite arm in Charlie Morton who just faced this same Yankee team and struck out 10 batters with only 1 ER allowed. Here is the difference – that game was in Tampa and this one is in Yankee Stadium, a place where Morton only lasted 4 innings earlier this year giving up 5 ER and 2 HR’s.
Picking on Morton in a vacuum obviously seems silly considering his elite K and GB rates, but this is a situation where you are playing the talent of the offense in what will likely end up being an over-looked stack. That fact alone to me is what really jumps out – on an 8 game slate with no Coors, no Dodgers/Red Sox – could the Yankees really go over-looked at home in the Bronx?
Keep an eye on the buzz today – rarely does the industry talk up stacks against opposing aces so if the weather holds and we can get the best pure offense on the slate at low ownership, paired with two stud arms? Well, I am in!
