Real Madrid make Kosovare Asllani their first signing to women’s team
Sweden attacking midfielder Kosovare Asllani was one of the best players as the 2019 Women’s World Cup, and she will make history as the first signing for the Real Madrid women’s team (also known as CD Tacon).
During the 2019 Women’s World Cup, Real Madrid purchased CD Tacon to finally join fellow Spanish powerhouse clubs FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid with a women’s team of their own.
This is the latest step in more investment in women’s football in Spain, and Real are one of the most powerful clubs in the world.
On Thursday morning, Sweden midfielder Kosovare Asllani announced that she is officially the first signing to the new Madrid team, posting a tweet that includes a picture of her throwing up a heart sign in the classic white Real Madrid kit. The words “Hala Madrid y Nada Mas” are written in cursive in the background.

Asllani, based on her Twitter history, has always been a Real fan, so this is a perfect match. She is a Madridista through and through.
More importantly, Asllani is one of the best players in the world, having shined at the 2019 Women’s World Cup. She also used to play for Ligue 1 powerhouse PSG before joining Manchester City. Asllani spent the 2017 and 2018 seasons with a third stint at Swedish club Linkoöpings FC. The 29-year-old had a stint with the NWSL’s (then the WPS) Chicago Red Stars early in her career.
Real won’t fully absorb CD Tacon until the 2020-2021 season, so Asllani will play for CD Tacon in 2019-2020 until the transition in complete. But it’s great to see that Real have immediately signed a world-class player in her prime, as this will make newly-promoted Tacon more competitive this season. It will also build more excitement around the new Madrid team for the 2020-2021 season.
Asllani’s skills on the football pitch cannot be understated. She works incredibly hard in attack and on defense, harrying attacking players. Asllani can play as a center attacking midfielder, a box-to-box midfielder, or even a striker when called upon. At the World Cup, Asllani was the best player on the third-placed team, putting her heart and soul into every tackle and coming up clutch, scoring three goals in the tournament. Her leadership qualities will be invaluable to CD Tacon/Real Madrid for years to come.
