MLB Power Rankings: Every team’s plan of attack before the trade deadline
By Sean Sears
20. San Diego Padres, 46-51, 4th in the NL West (ranked 18th last week)
The Padres have been linked to starters Noah Syndergaard of the Mets and Matt Boyd of the Tigers, and in regards to Syndergaard, it’s been even longer with reports saying San Diego inquired about his availability this offseason. But while Padres general manager A.J. Preller is apparently willing to add a controllable starter, he’s not committed to doing so, according to A.J. Cassavell of MLB.com.
The Padres do have a surplus of outfielders in Franmil Reyes and Hunter Renfroe, and both have been shopped by the Padres since the last off-season, but there are still no takers. However, a team like the Tigers might be the perfect trade partner with the Padres, netting them their starter with control while flipping a player like Reyes or Renfroe who have plenty of power but don’t have a long term future with San Diego. Maybe Trevor Bauer is the answer? Padres sure seem motivated to add a starter, despite what Preller says.
19. Cincinnati Reds, 43-52, last in the NL Central (ranked 22nd last week)
The Reds may be one of the few teams in the league with a losing record that may end up being buyers instead of sellers at the deadline. They do own the NL’s fifth-best run differential at the moment, their pitching is one of the better groups in baseball and they’re still within reach of a Wild Card spot (3.5 games) and their division (5.5 games).
The Reds have struggled since Derek Dietrich and the offense has quieted down some and could use a more reliable bat to pair with Dietrich, Suarez and rookie Nick Senzel. But they’re currently wrapping up a series with the Cubs and they’ll have to face the Cardinals and Brewers before the deadline, which could help define their trade deadline direction.
But with Yasiel Puig hitting well since early June, Tanner Roark and Anthony DeSclafani throwing well on expiring deals and the surprise pop from a player like Dietrich all could get the Reds back some nice pieces for the future.
