Dynasty League – Fantasy Football Rookie Mock Draft
By Raju Byfield
1.06 – D.K. Metcalf (WR – Seattle Seahawks)
No wide receiver landed in a better situation than D.K. Metcalf. Yes, N’Keal Harry saw his upside boosted by landing on the Patriots, but the smart money was that he was always going to become a solid NFL player. D.K. Metcalf on the other hand, as his uneven combine performance, injury-riddled college career and resulting spotty production may indicate, was always going to be a boom-or-bust proposition.
Thankfully for Metcalf, NFL teams are smarter than armchair analysts and he does not have first round draft capital attached to his name. This will allow him to make mistakes and perhaps even take time to develop that would not have been afforded to him if a team made the blunder of taking him in round one. An explosive, muscular receiver, Metcalf just needed the right quarterback to help unlock his gifts.
Russell Wilson is the absolute perfect quarterback for D.K. Metcalf. In fact, there is no other player that would be able to help D.K. realize his potential in the way Wilson can. One of the best deep ball throwers in the league, Wilson is also able to extend plays with his feet. This means that after the initial press Metcalf can quickly become an improbable cover. Buy him an extra couple of seconds with Wilson’s feet and Wilson to Metcalf can quickly become one of the most unstoppable duos in football.
Metcalf does have WR1 upside with Wilson, but the more likely scenario is that he becomes a high-end WR2 option with a WR3 floor. Metcalf may become a bit boom or bust due to the routes he will be asked to run early in his career. However, if he is able to gain some much-needed flexibility he will be able to competently run a full route tree, which in turn would help his dynasty upside soar.
