Build a proper women’s tag team division

The men’s division has always had a true separation of singles competitors and tag teams. Even when the men’s tag scene was suffering, audiences could still differentiate who competed single or tag. Lately the men’s tag division seems to be on the rise as the Usos, The Revival, Viking Raiders and more have begun being featured again.

There’s enough talent in the women’s division that could easily spawn a strong tag scene if a little effort was made to establish teams. For example, the six teams involved in the Elimination Chamber match for the inaugural Women’s Tag Team Championships have all but disappeared. Other than the current champs, the only team left is Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville, who are showcased more as friends than an actual tag team.

Any one of those other teams could make a prominent impact but instead they’ve all been separated. Nia Jax’s unfortunate injury put her on the shelf effectively dissolving her team with Tamina. Sasha Banks stepped away from the ring for an unknown amount of time, leaving Bayley to move onto an impressive singles run. The Riott Squad and Fabulous Glow were split apart and sent to separate brands. Why you would break up an already established team like The Riott Squad when there are Women’s Tag Team titles in play is anyone’s guess.

Teams should be being built up not split apart. They should be featured weekly in matches against each other to build up the competition in the division. Not everything needs to be a title match, but there needs to be a showcase for the competitors who are meant to be a threat to The IIconics, not enhancement talent taking up TV time. This would be another plus for having a strong women’s tag division. If you have four women out there battling each other, it means they’re not sitting in catering or wrestling in obscurity on Main Event.

Back in the days when tag team wrestling was strong, if bookers didn’t know what to do with talent they threw them together as a team. It didn’t always work but when it did you got Power and Glory, The Hollywood Blondes or The New Age Outlaws. The same thing could work for the women but some effort needs to but put in.

Tag names, tag moves, and matching gear are all symbols of an effective team. For the brief moment Carmella and Naomi had together as Fabulous Glow they complemented each other. Duos like that could easily move to the forefront as strong teams.
