How to make the WWE Women’s Tag Team Titles relevant again
Defend the titles at PPVs
You have a title you defend it — that should be obvious. Instead, The IIconics have held the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships hostage for months. The other brand titles are defended at almost every single pay-per-view, but the women’s tag titles haven’t been defended on a major show since WrestleMania 35 when The IIconics won them in the first place.
When titles aren’t defended, or even seen, they lose their clout. Does anyone even remember that the WWE Women’s Tag Team titles exist? Even if they want to keep the titles on The IIconics there are ways to let them gain the victory and still come across as major heels. The point is they’d be wrestling and the titles would be featured. Even if they appeared on the Kick-off Shows it would be better than not having them featured at all.
You need to build interest through engaging matches and angles to keep the titles fresh in the minds of viewers. Showing them every now and then doesn’t do anything to help elevate the division. The lack of consistency shows where they currently rank in the overall picture, and it isn’t very high.
An interesting idea would be to see an ongoing tournament across all brands to determine the No. 1 contender for the WWE Women’s Tag Team titles at the next pay-per-view. This would be a way to build up teams and reignite interest in the titles themselves. Once you have your match you keep that momentum going.
The bottom line in all this is that the WWE Women’s Tag Title scene needs a complete overhaul. Hopefully with Paul Heyman and Eric Bischoff appointed as Executive Directors of RAW and SmackDown things will change and the women’s tag division will be showcased more often.
