4. Oakland Athletics

Since being essentially left for dead in the playoff race by some people in the wake of starter Frankie Montas’ 80 game suspension on June 21, Oakland is 18-9 since then (going into Thursday) and they currently hold the second Wild Card spot in the American League.

Right fielder Stephen Piscotty is currently sidelined with a knee issue, and it’s not as if was knocking the cover off the ball anyway this year (.242, .697 OPS, nine home runs over 297 at-bats). Mark Canha has supplied some power as a fill in (16 home runs) and Robbie Grossman is who is (.252/.352/.383 slash mark this season) as the primary left fielder for the A’s.

The A’s front office has shown willingness to be aggressively all-in when it feels it’s warranted (see getting Jeff Samardzija and Jon Lester in 2014). The AL Wild Card race fades quickly, with three teams within four games of them going into Thursday and six teams at least 11 games behind, but Oakland needs to add some juice to their lineup and a thin market on that end has to put them in the mix for Puig.
