5 storylines to watch for as Europe’s top leagues get underway
Will Barcelona or Real Madrid win the Champions League?
Arguably two of the best clubs in Europe at the moment (and possibly in history), Barca and Real will be competing for continental supremacy on several fronts over the course of this season. For starters, Real Madrid will be looking to rebound from a poor season and try to knock Barcelona off its perch as Spain’s national champions.
In addition, the larger prize of the Champions League also looms large. Prior to last season, Real had won the title three consecutive times. After a poor start to last season, the club brought back former French striker Zinedine Zidane to coach the club. Zidane had been the architect of those three straight titles.
Real, winners of FIFA’s Club World Cup last December, aren’t the team to beat. Their El Clasico rivals Barcelona are the better side, at least on paper, and have in Messi a superstar capable of dragging the club to victory.
It will certainly be another wonderful season. Should Real and Barca play to their full potential, it could be a season where Spanish clubs dominate once again and prestige restored to two of Europe’s winningest teams.
