MLB DFS: Bulletproof Bashers- Sat. July 27 Evening Slates- SS, 3B, OF

SHORTSTOP

Marcus Semien, OAK:

Opposing Starting Pitcher: RH Adrian Sampson (TEX)

Semien is in a good spot on the other side of the Athletics-Rangers matchup. For starters, he owns a solid .333 average and has struck out just once against Rangers starter Adrian Sampson in nine career plate appearances. Moreover, Sampson has allowed a .401 wOBA, .266 ISO and 49.5 percent hard-contact rate to right-handed hitters while generating a mediocre 17.0 percent strikeout rate.

Then there’s a matter of the pitch splits at play. Sampson’s most utilized pitch by far against righty bats is the fastball sinker, which Semien owns a .363 CXwOBA and impressively modest 10.5 percent strikeout rate against. Sampson is highly ineffective with the pitch as well, as he’s surrendered a .466 wOBA and .447 CXwOBA when throwing it.

Rangers relievers present almost as appealing a matchup for Semien. The Texas bullpen is yielding a 5.48 ERA and .342 wOBA since the All-Star break.

THIRD BASE

Josh Donaldson, ATL:

Opposing Starting Pitcher: RH Zach Eflin (PHI)

Donaldson has been a nightmare for Phillies starter Zach Eflin over his career, touching up the right-hander for a .571 average in eight plate appearances. That sample includes four extra-base hits (three doubles, one home run) and no strikeouts. One of the reasons for Donaldson’s success is his ability to hit Eflin’s signature pitch to righty bats, the slider. Donaldson sports a .366 wOBA, .423 CXwOBA, and 317.5-foot average distance when facing the breaking pitch over the last three seasons.

The results are even better when Donaldson sees the low 90s fastball that’s a very close second in terms of pitches Eflin utilizes against righty bats. While Eflin yields a .349 CXwOBA on that offering, Donaldson crushes it for a .428 wOBA, .525 CXwOBA, .382 ISO and 49.2 hard-contact rate, and he generates a significant average distance of 343.5 feet when making contact on it.

The Phillies bullpen could be a boon for Donaldson’s production as well, as it had surrendered a 4.61 ERA and .321 wOBA in the second half prior to a Friday night showing where reliever Cole Irvin allowed another four runs (two earned).

ALSO CONSIDER: Matt Chapman, OAK

OUTFIELD

Jesse Winker, CIN:

Opposing Starting Pitcher: RH Chi Chi Gonzalez (COL)

Winker makes for an excellent fantasy match for Chi Chi Gonzalez’s considerable struggles versus left-handed hitters. Gonzalez has allowed a .479 wOBA and .321 ISO to lefty bats, and Winker boasts a .373 wOBA, 25.8 percent line-drive rate and 43.3 percent hard-contact rate against righties. But, that’s not where the outfielder’s appeal ends.

Winker also crushes the low 90s fastball that’s Gonzalez’s most frequently utilized pitch against lefty bats, one that he’s allowing a .468 wOBA/.499 CXwOBA on. Winker counters with a 396 wOBA/.433 CXwOBA against that offering and has struck out just 10.6 percent of the time on it. He also hits Gonzalez’s second favorite pitch against left-handed hitters, the slider, very well. Winker sports a .357 wOBA versus that pitch, as well as a very impressive 86.3 percent contact rate, an elevated figure against an offering that many hitters struggle with.

And the matchup for him versus the Colorado bullpen could hardly be better. Rockies relievers have allowed an MLB-high 8.83 ERA, .330 average and .409 wOBA since the All-Star break, along with an NL-high 13 homers.

ALSO CONSIDER: Mookie Betts, BOS; Ramon Laureano, OAK; Shohei Ohtani, LAA
