MLB DFS Pitching Primer: Cheap Arm/SP2

Steven Matz (6.4k FD, 6.9k DK) vs. Pittsburgh

I like the price tag on Matz tonight as a cheap option on either site. My Pirates have struggled against lefties all season and have not hit much since the All-Star break. Meanwhile, Matz is coming off a solid six-inning performance against the Giants last week allowing two runs while striking out six.

There’s not a lot of strikeout upside here, but Matz is pitching at home in a big ballpark and I think he has the potential for both a quality start and a win. I don’t have much faith in the Pirates these days and the Mets should be able to score some runs behind Matz off the fading Trevor Williams.

Cal Quantrill (6.4k FD, 6.6k DK) vs. San Francisco

Quantrill has emerged as a solid fifth starter for the Padres lately after working out of the bullpen for part of the year. He’s put together back to back scoreless outings against solid offenses such as the Cubs and Braves. His numbers look solid across the board and while he doesn’t offer a ton of K upside, he certainly does look good from a run prevention standpoint here as he faces the mediocre Giants offense.
