NFL Fantasy Football: NFL DFS on DraftKings
If you are a new or casual player playing small amounts more often than not, I would steer you towards DraftKings over FanDuel if you are still reluctant to try Yahoo or Fantasy Draft. The reason is actually simple, and it is the fact that their rewards program is geared directly at you, and it isn’t terrible to get back a little bit once in a while. Instead of being repetitive with contests available on DraftKings considering there are thousands available, let’s talk about daily missions and crowns instead.
DK Rewards
Even as someone who plays at least a little more volume than a casual player, I have to say the DK rewards can be beneficial to your bottom line if you have limited funds. Collecting crowns has a childish ring to it will certainly admit that part of it, but it can be worthwhile if you play every day. They offer crowns for achievements on each sport, and more information on that can be found here.

Crowns can be earned in other ways. Every day that you log in you are given a small amount, and every day you are also offered a daily mission which is another way to earn crowns. These crowns can eventually be used to buy into contests, and as you accumulate them, DK will always ask you to spend them first. Compared to FanDuel’s point system, DK Rewards are far more beneficial to the casual player.
Roster Construction and Scoring
If you prefer the full PPR scoring format and that is your be all end all, then DraftKings is your site. Roster construction is the same as FanDuel, so you will draft one QB, two RB’s, three WR’s, one TE, one FLEX, and one DEF/ST, all while staying under the salary cap. For the full breakdown for rules and scoring on DraftKings, you can find that here.
Rake
It was not too long ago that DK had the highest rake in the industry, but after FanDuel had their latest hike, DraftKings is now a little behind. On average in the large field GPP’s DK is coming in just below FanDuel at an average of around 18%. Once again, you will find no rake-free contests on DraftKings, with the exception of a few private and exclusive tournaments that you may come across while looking for content.
DraftKings will give you the best opportunity to get rich with the millionaire maker weekly tournament, but you will have to defeat hundreds of thousands of people to do so, so always keep that in mind. The pay dip down to 10th place there will likely be under 1% of the total prize pool once again obviously, as we will always see at least 20% go to the winner.
I will say for MLB this season, DraftKings has listened to the customer a little bit, and is offering large field GPP’s with much flatter payout structures. I have seen some with buy-in’s as little as $4.00, and my advice would be to always look and least say what spots 11-20 payout before you decide if it is worth it.
I have finished plenty in this range in my DFS career, and most of the time, defeating tens of thousands of others only to finish a few points a handful of others can be very disheartening. I will be searching hard for that flat payout structure tournament for NFL this season, and I expect it will be implemented.
