2018 Review: It was a tough year on this side of the ball, although there were a handful of bright spots. The Niners’ offense received a big blow just before the start of the season when free-agent pickup Jerick McKinnon went down for the season. And in the third game of 2018, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo also suffered a knee injury and was lost for the remainder of the year. On the plus side, George Kittle set a single-season NFL record for receiving yards by a tight end. Meanwhile, running back Matt Breida led the club with 814 yards and three scores on the ground.

2019 Key Additions: The signing of versatile Tevin Coleman can’t be underestimated. He’s very familiar with head coach Kyle Shanahan’s system. The former Atlanta Falcons’ standout should pair with McKinnon to give Garoppolo more options. General manager John Lynch added two wideouts in the second round of the draft in Deebo Samuel (South Carolina) and Jalen Hurd (Baylor). Veteran tight end Levine Toilolo is also familiar with Shanahan’s offense.

Analysis: Down McKinnon and Garoppolo for either all or more of 2018, the Niners still managed to put up respectable offensive numbers thanks to intriguing quarterback Nick Mullens and big contributions from Kittle and Breida. The 49ers still need better play from the offensive front. The club allowed 48 sacks this past season but that figures to improve this year. But the Niners need their starting quarterback to stay on the field in 2019.
