Power ranking the NFL offenses for 2019
22. Detroit Lions
2018 Review: For a time, the Lions looked like a team that was going to expand its offense a bit as rookie running back Kerryon Johnson said showed flashes. But he wound up missing far too much time and once again, Detroit’s ground attack was a non-factor once again. Veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford’s 10th NFL season was somewhat uneven. While he threw for 3,777 yards and 21 scores, he was sacked 40 times and committed 15 turnovers. A big plus was wideout Kenny Golladay, who led the team in catches (70) and receiving yards (1,063).
2019 Key Additions: There’s a new offensive coordinator in Darrell Bevell, who stressed the ground game while with the Seahawks. The Lions used the eighth overall pick in this year’s draft on talented tight end T.J. Hockenson (Iowa). He and veteran free-agent addition Jesse James (Steelers) could wind up being a terrific 1-2 punch at the position for Stafford. Veteran wideouts Danny Amendola and Jermaine Kearse were solid pickups as well.
Analysis: Stafford has a lot of offensive weapons at his disposal and the new tight end combination could make this attack very dangerous. More importantly, Bevell’s emphasis on the running game means Kerryon Johnson could be in for a big year. It all sounds good but the Lions’ offensive front must be more consistent than it was in ’18. Stafford had his share of ups and downs as well. This is a very intriguing unit that may surprise in a big way.
