Power ranking the NFL offenses for 2019
18. Minnesota Vikings
2018 Review: The Purple Gang invested heavily into free-agent quarterback Kirk Cousins. And while he put up big numbers he also made his share of costly mistakes, some of that due to poor offensive line play and a running game that finished with the third-fewest yards in the league. The seven-year pro totaled 30 TD passes but was sacked 40 times and had 17 of the club’s 20 turnovers. Dalvin Cook once again had problems staying healthy but both Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs finished with 100-plus grabs and each reached the end zone nine times.
2019 Key Additions: General manager Rick Spielman used the team’s first four selections in April’s draft on offensive help, adding a pair of offensive line prospects in center Garrett Bradbury (1-North Carolina State) and guard Dru Samia (4-Oklahoma). The Vikings also grabbed talented tight end Irv Smith Jr. (2-Oklahoma). In terms of veteran signings, the club inked guards Josh Kline and Dakota Dozier. And Sean Mannion is Cousins’ new backup.
Analysis: If the Vikings are going to take full advantage of Cousins’ skills, they must compliment him with a consistent ground attack. A season ago, only two teams in the league ran for fewer yards than the Purple Gang. Cook must prove he can remain healthy. Regardless, the quarterback must do a much better job of protecting the football regardless of any offensive line issues. All told, this is a tough group to get a gauge on at the moment.
