MLB DFS: Simmering Sluggers- Week of 7/29-8/4: C, 1B

CATCHER:

Kurt Suzuki, WAS

Batting line from 7/18-7/28: .217 average (5-for-23), one RBI, one hit by pitch, five walks, five runs

  • Line-Drive Rate from 7/18-7/28: 34.8 percent
  • Hard-Contact Rate from 7/18-7/28: 52.2 percent
  • BABIP from 7/18-7/28: .217
  • Plate Appearances from 7/18-7/28: 30

Quick analysis: Suzuki’s LD and HC rates are off the charts in our 10-day sample cited above, yet he doesn’t even have an extra-base hit to show for it. The veteran catcher is enjoying yet another solid offensive season and should certainly see his luck turn around with just a decent bump in his anemic BABIP. The coming week doesn’t necessarily bring any cakewalk matchups in terms of pitchers, so it remains to be seen if Suzuki will be able to keep up a similar batted-ball profile.

FIRST BASE:

Ian Desmond, COL

Batting line from 7/18-7/28: .194 average (6-for-31), one double, one home run, two RBI, two walks, two runs, one stolen base

  • Line-Drive Rate from 7/18-7/28: 25.0 percent
  • Hard-Contact Rate from 7/18-7/28: 33.3 percent
  • BABIP from 7/18-7/28: .217
  • Plate Appearances from 7/18-7/28: 33

Quick analysis: Desmond has also been putting good wood on the ball and yet has the same middling .217 BABIP as the just-covered Suzuki. The veteran does have some tough pitching matchups on his docket this week. However, the good news is he’ll be at Coors Field, where he boasts a .302/.354/.537 line this season. That includes a pair of daytime tilts in what should be some steamy, hitter-friendly weather.
