4. The Jets have a strong coaching staff

For the past several years, the Jets have had a poor record but haven’t been an outright dreadful team. The Jets were in a lot of games but failed to finish off enough wins, which led to the end of the Todd Bowles era in January.

Bowles was a tremendous man who was respected by his players, but his teams constantly had issues with discipline and reaching their potential. The Jets went the opposite direction of Bowles with their next hire, bringing in the more intense Adam Gase to succeed him.

Gase had a shaky end to his tenure in Miami, but he arrives in New York with a reputation as quarterback whisperer thanks to his record setting work when he was the offensive coordinator for Peyton Manning in Denver. The Jets quickly pounced on Gase when he became available, identifying him as the man to unlock the franchise quarterback potential of Sam Darnold.

Gase also brings head coaching experience to the table, something the Jets haven’t had in a coach since Bill Parcells took over back in 1997. Since Bill Belichick infamously resigned after 24 hours as the Jets’ coach in 2000, the Jets have hired exclusively first time coaches with defensive backgrounds, so Gase is the complete opposite of their usual approach.

Gase has also built a strong staff around him, including bringing in Gregg Williams to run the defense. Williams is another fiery personality known to get a lot out of his players, which can help the Jets unlock the potential of guys like Leonard Williams.
