5 reasons Jets can win the Super Bowl this year
2. Le’Veon Bell is an MVP-caliber addition to the offense
For years now, the New York Jets have struggled to find playmakers on the offensive side of the football. The Jets have always had their fair share of complementary wideouts or number two running backs, but they have had a very hard time finding bona fide stars that defenses have to focus on in their game plans.
That changed in a heartbeat when Le’Veon Bell signed on the dotted line back in March. Bell, who signed a four year deal after sitting out the entire 2018 season in a contract dispute with Pittsburgh, is a do-it-all back whose vision and patience as a runner will evoke the memory of Hall of Famer Curtis Martin with Jets’ fans.
The Jets’ offense will look light years better with Bell, who can not only be an every-down back but also catch 70 passes out of the backfield. While the Steelers used Bell on a lot of screens and check downs, Jets’ coach Adam Gase has already hinted that he will use Bell out of the slot and have him run combination routes, making Bell even more difficult for defenses to cover.
Having a guy like Bell around will take pressure off the rest of the Jets’ skill position group, which features ascending players like Robby Anderson, Quincy Enunwa, and Chris Herndon. If opposing defenses try to take Bell away from the Jets, that will create one-on-one matchups on the outside, and Gase’s scheme should allow the Jets to take full advantage of those mismatches.
Either way, Bell will be featured early and often for the Jets, who have rarely been a hot-bed for fantasy football players. Don’t be shocked if Bell is in the MVP conversation this season after a massive season in green and white.
