2. Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers

The Rangers may simply have no desire to trade Lundqvist to anyone, let alone a division rival, and he does have a no-move clause as a potential further barrier to a deal. But the Devils absolutely should have some interest, even if it means their call is met with a decline to engage in trade talks or even ask Lundqvist about a possible move to New Jersey.

The Rangers are currently a little over the salary cap ceiling, with buyouts (Kevin Shattenkirk, Brendan Smith) or trades (Chris Kreider) on the radar. They may or may not be motivated to move “King Henrik”, but his $8.5 million cap hit for each of the next two seasons stands out in New York’s financial picture.

Lundqvist is not anywhere near what he once was, at 37 years old now and with a notable downturn late last season. Over his final 17 games he went 3-11-3 with a 3.18 goals against average and a .904 save percentage, and over his final nine starts he was a bit worse in terms of goals-against (3.23 GAA).

But deployed properly, perhaps as part of tandem with Schneider as it relates directly to the Devils, Lundqvist could still be quite good. Before the aforementioned late fade, he earned a 2019 All-Star nod with a .916 save percentage and 891 saves (fourth in the NHL to that point in the season).
