John and June have become the heartfelt center of ‘Fear the Walking Dead’ and Jenna Elfman described the great strength of their unit at San Diego Comic Con.

Fear the Walking Dead had growing pains the first couple of years, but once it switched up the cast in season 3, it found its groove, with many of the storylines surpassing the main series, The Walking Dead. The most captivating one has been the evolving love story between John Dorie (“like the fish”) and June (“my favorite month”), which has developed a large following. The chemistry between actors Garret Dillahunt and Jenna Elfman is off the charts. Their love story has also infused the dark zombie apocalypse drama with some much-needed hope.

John expressed his feelings to June pretty early on, but it took June an extra season to work through her trust issues after the loss of her daughter (happened before the show started) and witnessing how much humanity degraded post-apocalypse.

The mid-season 5 finale teased that circumstances would continue to keep them apart, but thankfully, reason prevailed, with John tying up a candy wrapper into an engagement ring. Of course June said yes!

But will happiness abound during a time of stark reality?

Jenna Elfman talked about their solid core during the Fear the Walking Dead press conference at San Diego Comic Con.

"I think it’s the expansion of the relationship and they go through things. But unfortunately, in this world, it’s the universe that shoves them into their discomfort. They, together I think, are unbreakable.I don’t think with what they’ve been through, that there’s anything within themselves that would rip them apart. Period.Outside of themselves, with things that are absolutely beyond their control… that is part of the growth of the characters on how they respond to that and how they deal with that. But I think within them is a unit."

The introduction of John Dorie was the moment the series turned around for me. As is so often on the main series, it’s frequently the quieter moments that utterly fascinate, with tidbits of raw humanity (see Tyreese’s death on TWD). The episodes where June was being nursed back to health at John’s cabin, while the two of them were falling in love, represent the best storytelling on the show. They’ve been fan favorites ever since.

Garret Dillahunt brings a Western sensibility to the character, a little reminiscent of Clint Eastwood in The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. Although, Dillahunt brings a much bigger heart to his character.

Apparently, the actor is quite the marksman in real life, something the series has been able to effectively utilize in the story. One of the highlights of season five was the “San Antonio Split” trick shot Dorie performed in the episode when they found Dwight.

The show runner and executive producers Andrew Chambliss and Scott Gimple talked about the magic of putting such a trick shot together, including visiting the Western Museum in Los Angeles, to study some of Annie Oakley’s stunt shots. The magic of visual effects sealed the deal.

Things are going great between June and John at the moment, which of course is nerve-racking. It seems just when things come together for them, circumstances have a way of interceding.

FTWD’s midseason trailer also debuted at the SDCC panel.
