25 modern book-to-screen adaptations that didn’t let us down
Good Omens
Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett were the perfect combination of authors to pen a comical tale about the end of the world, and that’s exactly what they did in their 1990 novel, Good Omens. And with the timeless satirical genius behind the story, it was bound to be picked up for an adaptation eventually. And although Good Omens just hit Amazon this year, it’s already being lauded as one of the best interpretations of Neil Gaiman’s works.
Like the book, the series follows the angel Aziraphale and the demon Crowley as they attempt to stop the Apocalypse from taking place — despite the fact that both of their people are counting on and hoping for it. To prevent the end of the world, the two need to find the antichrist. Unfortunately, it seems that he’s been lost in all the work surrounding Armageddon.
In the book, the two main characters have a comical relationship full of witty banter and sass, and the series captures that perfectly on screen. It helps that Michael Sheen and David Tennant play the two lead characters, and that they themselves have so much chemistry with one another. Truly, the showrunners couldn’t have cast the series much better.
The writing and visuals also help to bring the story introduced in Good Omens to life, and the showrunners did an admirable job of recreating the strange world of Good Omens. While the story is supposed to take place on Earth, the setting has a darkly whimsical feel to it that could easily have fallen to the wayside during the adaptation. Luckily, it did not.
