MLB DFS Pitching Primer: Cheap Arm/SP2

Vince Velasquez (7.7k FD, 7.5k DK) vs. San Francisco

I’ll be honest, I’ve not been a Velasquez fan this season and I’d usually stack against him instead of roster him if I had the choice. But tonight is different. There are not many appealing value options so V.V. might be as cheap as I go with my player pool. He’s slowly rounding back into form and getting some confidence back after being relegated to the bullpen for a long stretch this season.

His most recent start against Detroit was his best of the season and there is some reason for optimism here that it wasn’t just a poor opponent. First of all, Velasquez was allowed to throw 110 pitches in his 5.2 innings against Detroit which means he is probably off a pitch count now going forward. Secondly, he was missing bats with his pitches as he struck out 9 Tigers while getting 14 swinging strikes.

He’s also been a guy who has trouble pitching deep into games as he runs up big pitch counts, but if is going to be allowed to go 100+ pitches again tonight, I like his chances of finally getting through six innings against this weak Giants offense. With 16 strikeouts in his last 10+ innings, you know the K potential is there, it’s just a matter of whether or not he can maintain command of his pitches and avoid walking hitters or grooving fastballs after getting behind in the count.

I’m also considering Wade LeBlanc (on Draftkings only at 6.4k) and Jose Urquidy (7k on Draftkings).
