Quarterback power rankings: Best college football quarterbacks of 2019
11. Justin Fields, Ohio State
After J.T. Barrett and Dwayne Haskins, Ohio State sought its next name at quarterback. Tate Martell was in place, but he transferred to Miami, after one of the formerly highest recruits of the 2018 class came to Columbus, OH.
Justin Fields chose Georgia for his freshman season, but with Jake Fromm already ahead of him. That limited the opportunities to just rushing plays, which he flourished in, with 266 yards and four touchdowns. There were zero passing plays, and with the Bulldogs having no need to make a quarterback change, it led to Fields’ departure.
Given how touted he was coming out of high school and the upside already shown with his legs, Fields warrants top quarterback consideration. He could land inside the top 10 by season’s end, but, along with playing under new head coach Ryan Day, there is much to prove.
If the Kennesaw, GA native lives up to the hype, he could jump into the Heisman Trophy conversation, much like previous Buckeyes who flourished offensively. The group is packed ahead of him, but Ohio State always receives the spotlight and down seasons rarely happen on this side of the ball.
How far Fields goes through the air remains unknown, but he has the talent to become a top two-way quarterback immediately, and the Big Ten will offer him tests quickly.
