Quarterback power rankings: Best college football quarterbacks of 2019
2. Tua Tagovailoa, Alabama
The 2018 Heisman Trophy was in Tua Tagovailoa’s hands for most of the season, until Kyler Murray took off down the stretch, had his Heisman moments and looked like one of college football’s best players.
2019 will be another test for Tagovailoa. There is no guarantee for this sport’s most prestigious award, but a second superstar season will position to be in New York for that final vote.
Everything Tagovailoa flashed in his freshman season — and the title game — came to light as a full-time starting quarterback last year. He barely missed 4,000 passing yards, threw for 43 yards and only had six interceptions. Even nicer was the 69 percent completion mark.
An injury debilitated Tagovailoa down the stretch and potentially prevented him from better numbers, as he threw for two interceptions against Georgia and in the National Championship Game. He actually opened the season with eight consecutive games without a turnover, which made the Crimson Tide’s path to the title as smooth as anyone’s in the nation.
Tagovailoa has the potential to go beyond what he did in 2018 and have one of the best college seasons for a quarterback in recent memory. How much further he goes remains unknown, but with a talented supporting cast and Nick Saban calling plays, the sky’s the limit for this situation.
