No. 5: Texas Longhorns

The Texas Longhorns’ fight song was birthed out of revenge, according to stories about Colonel Walter S. Honeycut and James E. King. Written to the tune of, “Taps,” this rendition was, “a counterpoint from taunts, songs and yells from the rival Texas Aggies.” Blondie Pharr, long-time Longhorn Band Director (1917-1937), penned the lyrics when the school officially adopted the song.

Sandwiched between chants of “Texas Fight!,” Texas A&M is literally mentioned in the second line, “And it’s goodbye to A&M.” The song continues on about being from Texas and wearing the orange and white; like most fight songs, it’s typically played after every score.

While the Longhorns have been singing about beating the Aggies for nearly a century, the results on the gridiron reflect those ambitions. Texas is winning the all-time series against A&M, 76-37, with the last victory coming in 2011. There isn’t much of a historical comparison between the two, either.

  • Texas is ranked 3rd all-time in wins (908); A&M is 17th (741)
  • Texas has played in 2nd most bowl games (55); A&M ranks 18th (40)
  • 60 consensus All-Americans have played at Texas (7th); 30 have played at A&M (23rd)
