MLB DFS Pitching Primer: Cheap Arm/SP2

Spencer Turnbull (6.6k FD, 7k DK) vs. Chicago White Sox

Turnbull is making his return from a three-week stint on the IL. He made only one rehab start and struck out 7 of the 13 hitters he faced over 3.2 innings at AAA.

I normally use caution with pitchers coming off injuries, but it was a relatively minor injury (back strain) and the team doesn’t seem to be too concerned with it as they skipped his second rehab start.

He couldn’t ask for a better match-up to get back into a groove on the mound as he’ll face the White Sox and their massive 26% K rate. Jon Jay is the only hitter in this projected lineup with a sub-20% strikeout rate. Meanwhile, Turnbull has been solid against righties this season with a 25% K rate and a ground ball rate of 53%.

With Moncada out of the lineup, the White Sox really don’t have many threats from the left side of the plate. Light hitting Jon Jay has been hitting cleanup lately and Ryan Goins has been their best hitter. The ground ball rates for Chicago are up there, too, meaning Turnbull should be able to get them to keep the ball on the ground.

If you’re leery of taking a pitcher coming off an injury then there just so happens to be another pitcher who is right around the same price who I am equally high on for tournaments tonight.
