College football 2019: Top 10 players, ranked – Tua or Trevor at No. 1?
By Phil Poling
After a Biletnikoff Award-winning campaign in 2018, wide receiver Jerry Jeudy is expected to go above-and-beyond as a junior. He emerged as the Tide’s go-to target as a sophomore, leading a talented Tide bunch in receptions (68), receiving yards (1,315), and touchdowns (14). Those numbers had to stack up well against the nation’s best to win a Biletnikoff, though, and Jeudy’s did.
He scored the third-most touchdowns, tallied the tenth-most receiving yards, and averaged the 16th-best yards per reception total (19.34) in the country. In each of Alabama’s first three games, Jeudy tallied two touchdowns. It all happened on a low volume of catches, too: just four vs. Louisville, four vs. Arkansas State, and three @ Mississippi. He did surpass 100 receiving yards five times, too, doing so in four of those games without exceeding five catches. The ability to add yards to catches is important, and Jeudy’s proven he can do so on minimal touches.
The only number that’s suspect when looking at Jeudy’s stats are his yards per game average, but that can be attributed to the wealth of talent Alabama possesses and the fact his season (15 games; SECCG, two CFP games) is longer than the average player’s (12). If that’s the biggest complaint about a player at Jeudy’s age, it’s safe to say his domination wasn’t a fluke.
At 6-foot-1 and 192 pounds, Jeudy isn’t undersized, either. He can win against bigger corners but also take hits over the middle. His production will demand more attention from defenses moving forward, but another offseason with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is expected to result in another CFP run.
