Fantasy Football: QB1 Rankings / Targets / Fades

#1 Andrew Luck

Target: The consummate pro was healthy during his off-season. That means he was able to hone his craft and improve on the areas that he struggles. He has not had a healthy off-season in a few years, which I will blame on the Colts O-line.

An offensive line that now boasts a bolstered group of free-agency additions and draft picks. The 32nd ranked offensive line in 2017-18 became somewhat of an asset in 2018-19.

The addition of rookie Quinton Nelson was huge. He is an absolute monster, and now he has another year of experience under his belt. In addition to an improved O-line, the Colts upgraded at receiver.

They brought in Devon Funchess via free agency and Paris Campbell via the draft. Those additions will fit nicely alongside TY Hilton, contributing to Luck’s success. I am offering a strong buy on Andrew Luck stock in your upcoming draft.

#2  Aaron Rodgers

Fade: You will have to overpay for Aaron Rodgers to grace your roster this year in fantasy football. Do not get me wrong, A-Rod is incredible. He is excellent in the pocket, on the move, and across the line of scrimmage. He can really do it all.

What has me passing on the quarterback is the team around him. Green Bay lacks depth at the offensive line and at wide receiver. They have never replaced Jordy Nelson and lost Cobb to free agency (not that it was much of a loss).

Adams is an absolute monster, but Rodgers will struggle getting the ball to a double covered Adams when he is lying on his back. Don not overpay for low upside.

#3 Patrick Mahomes

Target: Will there be a regressing in 2019 for surgery on his throwing shoulder.  Patrick Mahomes? I guarantee it. However, with the weapons at his arsenal and the mustachioed guru Andy Reid at his side, I cannot fade Mahomes.

The Chiefs added depth at wide receiver in the draft and their defense has actually gotten worse with the loss of Justin Houston, making shootouts more likely.

The rookie had an entire off-season to improve his footwork and pocket presence. He seems like someone that wants to be great, so I am sure that he will have improved on the little things that went unnoticed by the stat book last year.

#4 Carson Wentz

Target: A guy built like Wentz should not spend so much time on the sidelines. He is another quarterback that suffered at the sake of an injury-riddled offensive line.

The front office added LT Andre Dillard in the draft and added to Wentz’s weapons. They drafted RB Miles Sanders, WR JJ Arcega-Whiteside and traded for Jordan Howard, DeSean Jackson. If Nick Foles was able to be a Super Bowl MVP with a similar roster, then Carson Wentz should be able to finish in the top of the fantasy football QB’s in 2019-20.

#5 Deshaun Watson

Target: Watson is an injury risk due to his size and penchant for escaping the hashes. However, his upside is too enticing to pass up. The 3rd year pro has two amazing weapons in DeAndre Hopkins and Will Fuller.

The brass bolstered the offensive line by drafting Tytus Howard and Max Scharping in the first 2 rounds of April’s NFL Draft.  OT Matt Kalil was also brought in via Free Agency. So protecting Watson is at least a priority.

Year 3 is a big spot for quarterbacks. I think Watson takes a huge step in his 3rd year. He is a smart kid with a winning tradition behind him.

#6 Cam Newton

Fade: Newton has taken a beating the past few years. He has missed time due to surgery on his throwing shoulder. That is never a good sign for a quarterback. Especially one that relies so much on his God-given abilities.

He appears frustrated on the field and it does not look like he is having as much fun as he did as a younger man. The offensive line, or lack-there-of, has aged the former 1st overall pick. Yes, Cam has tremendous upside due to his feet/arm combo meal.

However, Cam’s floor is scarier than the upside. His options outside of Christian McCaffrey leave much to be desired and his offensive line did not improve over the off-season. No a great combo for a QB that underwent his 2nd shoulder surgery in as many off-seasons.
